"Again, are we holding family home evenings each week? Your immediate results may seem far from ideal at times, but by holding weekly family home evenings, as we have been counseled, we help to perfect that eternal family unit."

Lesson on Families

Purpose:

To help students gain an understanding that Heavenly Father gives us families so that we may help and strengthen each other.

Materials Needed

Jewelry box, chalkboard, chalk, thermometer chart.

Application

Object Lesson: Display the jewelry box. Point out the features. It is made of strong wood so that all the precious jewels can be kept in one safe place. It is lined with velvet so the jewels won't be scratched or damaged. There are separate compartments to keep the items from getting tangled together. These special boxes are designed to preserve and protect jewelry.

Remind the children that they are special jewels of Heavenly Father's. He loves them dearly and has created something wonderful to preserve and protect them during earth life. He created families.

Brainstorming: Begin by reading to your group the first of the three situations that follows. Give them three minutes to brainstorm ideas. Use one student to record the ideas on a chalkboard. Follow this same procedure for each situation. To encourage the children to participate and think of more ideas each time, use the thermometer chart. As the ideas increase, the temperature on the chart also increases.

1. Patricia is the youngest child in her family. She somethimes feels that no one likes her. What can her family do to help Patricia?

2. Daniel is having a hard time learning to read. What can his family do to help?

3. Mother is very sick. She has to stay in bed. What can the family do to help?

Praise the group for their creative thinking. Point out that this is why Heavenly Father put us together in families. We can help each other in many ways. We must watch carefully and always be thinking of special ways to help our family.

Game: There are some very important things which we should always be doing for the members of our family. The children will have to figure out what these things are by playing Hangman. Use the following words for your game: pray, fast, gratitude, and example. Briefly explain why each is important.

Singing Time Suggestions

Conclusion
